During the warm, summer months, it is important to keep your child cool, whether you’re inside or out. Follow these tips to ensure your baby stays comfortable and healthy during the summer season.
During the summer it is very important to ensure your baby’s room is at a comfortable temperature. Overheating your baby is linked to an increased risk of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS), otherwise known as cot death. Buy a thermometer and make sure you keep the room at a comfortable temperature between 16-20°C. You can use a fan to cool the room, but make sure it isn’t aimed directly at your child. Slumbersac lightweight sleeping bags are a great way of ensuring your child is cool and comfortable on warm nights. 1.0 Tog baby sleeping bags are slightly padded and sleeveless, suitable for room temperatures between 18-24 degrees and the lighter 0.5 tog sleeping bags are made from a single layer of fabric, also sleeveless and suitable for very hot nights with room temperatures above 24 degrees. If you are worried your baby might be too hot, check their temperature by putting your hand on the skin on their stomach, or the back of their neck. Don’t use their hands or feet as a guide as they will always feel cooler than the rest of their body. If your baby’s skin is hot or clammy, remove some layers.
During the day
It's important to keep your child cool and comfortable throughout the day as well as during the night. Our sleeping bags with feet are a great solution for babies and toddlers who like to enjoy the comfort of their sleeping bag, but also want the freedom to move about and walk around. With leg holes to pop their feet through they can stay cool on the move. We've also launched our NEW bamboo muslin sleeping bags with feet made of luxurious, silky bamboo muslin. These sleeping bags are lightweight, durable and naturally breathable, keeping your baby cool and comfortable, drawing moisture away and regulating body temperature, reducing the risk of them overheating during the night.
Car Seats can make your child very hot and bothered in warm temperatures so try and pick one that is made from lightweight materials. Also make sure your child is wearing very thin layers. Retractable car shades are also a great way of protecting your little one from the sun while traveling. If you are using a buggy Slumbersac Travel Bags are a great idea. Available in 0.5 and 1 Tog these travel bags will ensure your little one is cool and comfortable while you’re on the go!
Out and About
When out and about in the summer dress your child in loose-fitting, lightweight clothing, preferably cotton, as this will keep them cooler. Buy them a broad-brim hat to protect their face and eyes and avoid going out when the sun is at its hottest (approx. 10am-2pm). If you are out during these times, try and stick to shaded areas. Also remember to apply SPF30+ or higher, broad-spectrum and water-resistant sunscreen on any exposed areas of skin and reapply every two hours, or more frequent if washed off. Babies aged under 6 months have highly absorptive skin and the Australasian College of Dermatologist recommends minimising the use of sunscreen.
